Visit the Independent Media Center to take in “Coming Home.” The show will feature collages, prints and poetry created by participants in the Self-Care Writing Workshop Series led by Dr. Meadow Jones. The show will also include art submitted by community members on the theme, which encompasses issues of being unhoused, housed, being home, coming home, and being welcome or unwelcome- in our buildings, in our bodies, in our families.
Dr. Meadow Jones is a social practice artist, an award winning filmmaker and community organizer. She led an eight-week self-care writing workshop where participants engaged with the Amherst Writers Method to create poetry as well as collages, and prints. The work of community participants is at the heart of the show, where other community members will also be invited to display work on the theme that emerged, “Coming Home.”
Combine your visit with the chance to hear poetry by participants in the Self-Care Writing Workshop on Saturday, April 13th from 3-5pm. That same day, beginning at 2:15pm, regular tours will be held to the Urbana Makerspace in the lower level of the Independent Media Center.
The Self-Care Writing Workshop is hosted by the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center and Cunningham Township Supervisor’s Office. The UCIMC acknowledges support from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from Illinois Arts Council Agency.
The UCIMC’s ramp for the main level/venue is located on the south side of the building between the UCIMC and Lincoln Square. For Makerspace access, please use the ramp on the north side of the building off of Elm Street.
