Is beauty skin deep? Or can you find it deep within yourself, despite everything you’ve lived through? Kaitrin Higbee seeks to answer this question with her Beauty in the Bones exhibit for Boneyard 2025. Beauty in the Bones features real animal bones that have been bedazzled with flatback glass rhinestones. These pieces throw the harsh realities of life into stark relief against the beauty of the spirits within, inviting all to ponder the meaning of beauty and strength.

Also featured this year is A Flower for Every Time I Should Have Told You No. This is based on a poem that Kaitrin wrote after a messy breakup of a long term partner who was not at all what he seemed. This piece invites you to reflect on the times when you also should have said no. How large would your garden be if you had a flower for every time you should have told someone no?

Kaitrin Higbee is an Urbana based artist/chaos goblin. She works with polymer clay, resin, dried flowers, bones, and anything she can get her hands on. The joke is “Every time she has a feeling, she makes more stuff….and she has a lot of feelings.” Kaitrin Higbee moonlights as Mellie Lia on WEFT 90.1FM Saturdays for Lovely Lo-fi.
