The Concrete Barrier Painting Project is a collaborative community art initiative aimed at transforming a public space in Urbana, Illinois, into a vibrant cultural experience. This initiative brings together two courses from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: ARTJ 302 (Introduction to Anime) and ARTE 206 (Museums in Action), to develop an integrated project that serves the community.
In this project, students from ARTJ 302 will create a concrete mural inspired by Japanese anime and manga art, exploring its historical significance, global influence, and connections to philosophy and media. At the same time, students from ARTE 206 (Museums in Action) will design and implement a community engagement program during the mural creation process, offering interactive opportunities for the public to engage with the artwork and its themes.
Public activities will take place on April 5 and 6, from 1-4 pm, at 226 West Main Street, Urbana. Visitors are welcome to join in chalk and spray chalk painting on the barriers, along with other art activities, contributing their own creative touch to the space. All materials will be provided.
Please note: The chalk drawing and spray painting activities are weather-dependent and will take place when the skies are clear and sunny.
