Shauri Gonzalez

My work explores identity, softness, and the ways individuals exist within intimate spaces. Through illustration and portraiture, I am interested in how personality, presence, and lived experience shape the environments we inhabit. My practice often centers quiet moments and subtle expressions of individuality that might otherwise be overlooked.

In my cat illustrations, I create whimsical domestic scenes where cats become characters within feminine, cozy environments. These works celebrate softness and individuality, portraying cats as both playful and sovereign. They embody rest without guilt, affection without submission, and the quiet confidence often associated with femininity.

In contrast, my portrait work focuses on disability and the lived experience of the body. These pieces highlight physical presence, vulnerability, and strength through detailed studies of posture, texture, and assistive devices. Rather than centering limitation, these portraits aim to show the complexity and humanity of disabled bodies and identities.

Though stylistically different, both bodies of work explore themes of autonomy, presence, and belonging. Whether through whimsical storytelling or intimate portraiture, my work invites viewers to consider the beauty, individuality, and quiet resilience that exist within everyday life.

Shauri Gonzalez is an emerging artist based in Urbana, Illinois. She graduated from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 2022 with a Paining degree, but needed a hiatus from art after her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis in 2019. Her challenges posed by her disability are channeled by her resilience.

The proud and disabled Afro-Latina that she is, in 2025, she launched her small business, Elegant Easel, where she continues to grow as an artist and businesswoman. Although she works across a variety of media, charcoal drawing holds a special place in her heart as her preferred medium.

Through her work, she enjoys portraying feminine energy and the joy that comes with it. Embracing softness, strength, and playfulness in her art, creating pieces that radiate positivity and invite others to feel uplifted and inspired.
