Satomi Kamei
I began creating art during my university years in Japan, inspired by Japanese literature and calligraphy. In Hiroshima, I joined a local watercolor group, drawn to the transparency and depth of the medium. After moving to the U.S., I studied studio art, focusing on figure drawing and oil painting, and joined local sumi-e, watercolor, and graphic design groups, enjoying plein air painting with friends. Reuniting with master calligrapher Shozo Sato led me to study Zen calligraphy, and I continue to practice hanging scroll making learned in Kyoto. I also support students’ work and occasionally hold exhibitions. As a Hiroshima native, I aim to create art that brings a sense of calm and harmony to those who experience it.
