Robb Springfield

I moved to Illinois 40 years ago and fell in love with its wide, horizontal landscape and expansive skies. For the past few years, I’ve been painting Midwestern landscapes, and my current series focuses on a single field in South Urbana observed over the course of a year.

The colors and cloud formations in these skies feel unlike anywhere else. I’ve chosen gouache as my medium for its unique ability to be both transparent and opaque, which gives me the flexibility and freedom to capture the shifting qualities of the sky.
