SUMMARY:Needful Things Warehouse Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Fine art painter Beth Darling will be exhibiting vibrant landscapes of the southwest\, local gardens and whimsical still lives. \nJill Quisenberry will be exhibiting landscape watercolor paintings\, acrylic paintings\, paintings on tile and Santorini stone. Jill will also have book corners that are hand painted watercolor with gold leaf. \nApril Lucas will be exhibiting repurposed antiques\, mushroom art assemblages and vintage tin vignettes. \nMelissa Mitchell will be exhibiting 3-D sculptural assemblages from unusual objects. \nBeth Darling: Beth Darling’s imaginative gardening\, southwest and still life oils and acrylic paintings\, painted in a style she calls “direct observational realism\,” convey her joyful celebration of life. Her unconventional\, often whimsical choice of subjects rendered in a juicy impasto of brilliant colors and rich patterns achieve a childlike simplicity in spite of her years of formal training. Her works are serious paintings but their refreshing honesty makes them optimistic and lighthearted. Beth’s works can be seen in her large sunny studio on the top floor of the historic Lincoln Building at 44 E Main St.\, Downtown Champaign. \nJill Quisenberry: Jill Quisenberry\, Medium – Watercolors\, Acrylics\, and Mixed Media. Jill will be exhibiting watercolor paintings\, acrylic paintings\, paintings on tile and Santorini stone. Jill will also have book corners that are hand painted watercolor with gold leaf. Jill’s watercolors and larger scale acrylic paintings are mostly landscapes. Jill Quisenberry – is a retired elementary school teacher who sees art as a way to share beauty and as therapy for the artist.  Jill wants the viewer to feel peace and enjoy a little window into a calming space.  Jill enjoys many different styles and ways to convey my emotions as artistic production.  Jill’s art can be seen and purchased on Facebook @ JillQuisenberry\, or Instagram @ mrsqberry  and is also located at The Vault Art Gallery in Tuscola\, IL \nMelissa Mitchell: Melissa Mitchell is a Champaign-based assemblage/creative-reuse artist\, photographer\, writer and collector of vintage and other unusual objects. The lines dividing her multiple identities tend to blur and shift — often without warning. Collectibles from home and garden décor are sometimes co-opted for use in assemblage sculptures or become photographic subjects. She has exhibited and sold her work in juried exhibitions and galleries locally and throughout the United States. Mitchell’s work may be viewed at her ACME Elfworks studio in downtown Champaign by appointment; contact: ACMEelfworks@gmail.com \nApril Lucas: April Lucas is a retired florist and active craftsperson specializing in repurposed antiques and vintage tin vignettes. Aprils works can often be found at local and regional arts and crafts shows. He currently works as a freelance illustrator and is launching a small risograph press in town called Get Home Safe. SUMMARY:The Cohen Exhibition Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Prairie Rivers Network and our friends at the Cohen Exhibition Workshop in Urbana present an exhibition exploring the future of the Illinois landscape—one shaped by restoration\, resilience\, and possibility. Illinois’ landscape tells a powerful story: fertile soils\, vast prairies\, winding rivers\, and communities deeply connected to the land. Today\, that landscape also holds extraordinary opportunity—to restore natural systems while building a healthier and more resilient future for all who call this place home. Imagine: Wetlands filtering drinking water and absorbing excess floodwaters. Prairies supporting biodiversity while storing carbon in deep-rooted soils. Rivers connecting communities across the state while sustaining the ecosystems that make life here possible. This exhibition invites viewers to see the Illinois landscape not only as it is—but as it could become. \nFEATURING: \nTali Weinberg \nKim Curtis \nPeg Shaw \nMatt Harsh \nKelly Hieronymus \nIncluding paintings\, weaving\, video and sound. \nHours:\nFriday from 2pm-7pm\nSaturday from 3pm-8pm

SUMMARY:Spurlock Museum
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 10th – 10am-4pm\nSaturday\, April 11th 10am-4pm\nSunday\, April 12th 12-4pm\n“Street Pavers” by Timothy J. Hickey is a series of short videos. The work features the historic brick streets of Champaign\, Illinois and contains subtle\, slow-paced imagery with quiet accompanying ambient audio. The point of view looks downward with a framework of bricks acting as a stage for each video while external forces act upon the static paver bricks below. These changing elements vary with the seasons\, weather\, sky conditions and whatever else is happening. \nThe imagery is reinforced by field-recorded\, ambient sounds occurring during these moments. The videos may contain rain\, snow\, light changes as clouds pass overhead\, trees branches above reflected in puddles below\, wind moving shadows or leaves across the pavers\, vehicle traffic\, bird song and other common neighborhood sounds. \nThe results are a unique exploration of time and place. Stop by the Spurlock Museum anytime during run hours to watch these shorts on a recurring loop and experience selections of Hickey’s work. \nTimothy J. Hickey is a video artist featuring more than a dozen years’ documentation of Champaign’s historic brick paved streets as a stage for sound\, weather and seasons to act upon \nFriday\, April 10th – 6-7pm\nBandoneon Massacre presents a program that spans nearly a century of tango. The performance features music from the 1930s—tango’s “Golden Age”—alongside contemporary works for tango string orchestra from the 2020s. \nThrough lively rhythms\, expressive melodies\, and modern ensemble textures\, the concert highlights both the rich tradition and ongoing evolution of tango\, connecting its historic dance-hall roots with today’s creative interpretations. \nBandoneon Massacre is a community tango orchestra collective based in Champaign-Urbana\, IL. The ensemble was founded in 2011 by tango dancer\, dance instructor\, and bandoneonist Joe Grohens as part of a group of tango dance enthusiasts who wanted to dive deep into the world of tango music and learn how to play it. \nWhile its members have varied\, the love for tango has been consistent. Over 60 professional and amateur musicians have been a part of the group\, including members of the Champaign-Urbana tango dance community\, local musicians\, and university students. \nThe group has primarily studied tango dance music from the 1930s\, 1940s\, and 1950s alongside selections from contemporary tango music composers and arrangers. Bandoneon Massacre has performed in a wide variety of events and venues\, bringing the joy and passion of tango music for dancing and for listening to milongas (tango social dances)\, schools\, community events\, bars and breweries\, and more \nSaturday\, April 11th 4:30pm\nFilm: Five Month Trial – When Gabi’s (Francesca Idoyaga) five-month romance rule collides with Luke’s (Joey Quinn) fear of commitment\, their experiment unravels into a witty\, inclusive portrait of love and self-discovery. Written by Orlando Joubert Jr. and Madison Hook; Directed by Orlando Joubert Jr. (85 min.) \nOrlando Joubert Jr. is a feature film director. \nSunday April 12th 1-3pm\nSpurlock Sunday: Unfinished Revolutions Zine Making Unfinished Revolutions: Living Stories of American Rights explores our ongoing struggle to define\, expand\, and protect America’s promises of liberty\, equality\, and justice. The exhibit doesn’t tell a single story. It invites participants to contribute to telling this complex story from many interpretations and points of view. If you’ve ever watched the summer Olympics\, you’ve likely noticed the popularity of the track and field relay races. Relays involve teams of four runners; each charged with sprinting with the baton and successfully passing it to the next runner. While teammates hold the same responsibility and collective goal\, the how and why of their individual roles may differ. What if we used the metaphor of a relay team for Unfinished Revolutions? Instead of sprinting to the finish line for a track and field relay race\, imagine you’re contributing to an unfinished revolution for liberty\, equality\, and justice.\nWho are you passing the baton to?\nWhat are you fighting for?\nHow does it impact the success of the race?\nThe Spurlock Museum invites you to contribute to the Unfinished Revolutions exhibit by creatively responding to these prompts. You’ll create a page to be included in a special exhibit zine. (Zines\, short for magazines\, are small\, handmade booklets often designed to share special interests or personal stories.) Your page\, created on canvas\, will be put on view in the exhibit and added to the exhibit zine. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to have your voice included in Unfinished Revolutions. Join us for our Spurlock Sunday activity April 12th 1pm-3pm\, and don’t miss out on this opportunity to have your voice included in Unfinished Revolutions. \nMonica M. Scott\, Manager of Community Engagement and Programs\, and Jeffrey Pegram\, Manager of School and Family Programs\, worked collaboratively to design this art making activity in conjunction with Spurlock’s Unfinished Revolutions exhibit and through the lens of their educational roles at the museum. \nFriday\, 4/10 10am-4pm “Street Pavers”\nFriday\, 4/10 6-7pm Bandoneon Massacre\nSaturday\, 4/11 10am-4pm “Street Pavers”\nSaturday\, 4/11 11th 4:30pm Film: Five Month Trial\nSunday\, 4/12 12-4pm “Street Pavers”\nSunday\, 4/12 1-3pm Spurlock Sunday: Unfinished Revolutions Zine Making \n
