John Palen

I’ve been writing and publishing poems for more than a half century, on such topics as varied as small-town and big-city life, prairie ecology, and riding public transit. I am particularly interested in exploring behind the scenes in the workplace, whether it be an opera pit or a newspaper back shop.

My latest book of poems, “Strange and Wonderful Creates,” came out in 2025 from Sheila-Na-Gig Editions. It is my ninth book. My first published poem appeared in the magazine Prairie Schooner in 1967. I have published regularly since.
