Contact Improvisation Dance JAMS at Urbana Dance Company
2nd Sunday of the month 1:00 – 3:00p
guided by rebeca medina
music improvisation by Jason Finkelman (truly wonderful team)
Jam description: The Jam is an open space of mutual respect that we hold for people to come and practice, explore and dance contact improvisation. We focus on creating physical connection and a safe space for participants to be curious and dance with other or by themself. CI JAMS are a two hour gathering in which people can arrive at anytime and leave at any point.
What is Contact Improvisation?
Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance form based on the ongoing dialogue between two bodies that are in physical contact, improvising with weight, listening, balance, gravity, momentum, reflex and inertia.
In our CI classes at Urbana Dance Company we study, explore and define CI fundamental concepts: the rolling point of contact, falling and rolling, weight exchange, counterbalance and off-balance, basic lift vocabulary and principles, continuity of motion, momentum and physical listening. We move with others while taking care of our own body and needs. No experience is required; we will be building this community together!
