Gertrude Antonina Bakalus

Gertie is an artist who lives in Champaign, Illinois. She works with recycled fabrics and discarded clothing that otherwise would have gone to landfills, using appliqué quilting techniques to explore landscapes and places. The pieces are constructed through a collage-like process of cutting, layering, and stitching fabric, using simple shapes and materials with varied patterns. Layered, tactile compositions are translated through shapes, colors and textures. Each piece is finished in a handcrafted maple frame.
